Day 6: Leg Up Farmers Market in York, Pennsylvania

I'm not sure exactly what I expected from Leg Up, but what I found upon arrival was way more than I could have anticipated. Leg Up isn't just a farmers market and it's size defies the conventional stereotypes of the old-fashioned, road-side shack I'm accustomed to back on Long Island.  After grabbing a refreshing cold-pressed juice from the fridge to refuel, I chatted with the store's manager and found out a bit of backstory to the business. The market is an extension of the Leg Up Farm Family; a non-profit entity that encompasses both the Leg Up Farm - a therapy center for children with special needs - and Able-Services, which provides day program services for adults with special needs. The store was opened with the intention of furthering the non-profit's efforts to service their already established community and beyond. Day 4: Kimberton Whole Foods in Douglasville, Pennsylvania

At the end of a beautiful 50 mile ride along the Schuylkill River Trail from Philadelphia, I found myself at Kimberton Whole Foods in Douglasville, Pennsylvania. I was very excited to see Kimberton as I've been looking up to the owner, Terry Brett, for years. After meeting and getting to know Terry through numerous INFRA events, I've come to regard him as something of the perfect combination between a sharp businessman and a caring, empathetic, and passionate human being.  INFRA stores are so often a palpable expression of the owner and I was excited to see what Terry in health food store form would be like! Day 3: Big Bear in Morrisville, Pennsylvania

My next stop was Big Bear Natural Foods in Morrisville; one of four in a small chain of family-owned stores around the Pennsylvania/New Jersey border.  This one is located conveniently (for a car haha) right off of US-1 and is a great choice for travelers headed south from the New York/New Jersey metro area. I arrived just as some heavy rain came rolling in and the incredibly friendly staff had no trouble with me stashing my bicycle inside as Big Bear really embodies their namesake; the store was so much larger and wide open then I had expected! Coming from New York, I'm much more accustomed to the old "hole in the wall" health food stores of yore, but Big Bear was much more spacious and that made for a more enjoyable shopping experience as I could stretch out and wander through the wide aisles, perusing their selection.
